OLD MILL, LITTLE BETTESHANGER, NORTHBOURNE, DOVER, KENT. A view of Old Mill, showing the smock mill in working condition, photographed in May 1929. A mill is known to have been standing on this site in 1769, near the hamlet of Little Betteshanger. It lost two of its sails in 1925 but the owner Lord Northbourne reconditioned the mill in 1928. At the time of the photograph it was a working mill and was operated by Mr J Court who appears to be standing at the door to the mill. It was later demolished in 1957

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of the Old Mill in Little Betteshanger, Dover, Kent. Taken in May 1929 by Francis Matthew Shea, it showcases the smock mill in all its glory, standing proudly against a backdrop of lush greenery. With its origins dating back to 1769, this historic mill has witnessed centuries of change and transformation. Despite facing setbacks such as losing two sails in 1925, thanks to the dedication of owner Lord Northbourne, it was reconditioned and restored to working condition by 1928. In this snapshot from history, we catch a glimpse into everyday life at the mill. Mr J Court can be seen standing at the entrance door - perhaps taking a momentary break from his duties as he oversees operations within. The photograph serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and nature's power harnessed through wind energy. Regrettably, time eventually caught up with this beloved landmark. In 1957, after serving generations faithfully for almost two centuries, the Old Mill met its demise when it was demolished. As we admire this image today, let us reflect on how structures like these mills were once vital cogs in our industrial past. They not only provided sustenance through their corn milling capabilities but also stood tall as symbols of community strength and resilience against time's relentless march forward.
