EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the regal presence of Albanian King Zog I, born Ahmed Zogu, during his tenure as President of Albania in the mid-1920s. Dressed in an ornate and formal uniform, adorned with gold braid and insignia, King Zog I exudes an air of extravagance and ceremonial grandeur. Having initially served as Prime Minister from 1923 to 1924, he assumed the presidency in January 1925. On September 1st, 1928, he boldly proclaimed himself King of the Albanian people, marking the beginning of his reign. Despite the political turmoil and instability that characterized much of Albanian history during this period, King Zog I maintained a strong grip on power. His rule was characterized by modernization efforts, including the establishment of a new constitution and the creation of a national army. King Zog I's reign came to an end in 1939 when Italian forces invaded Albania, forcing him to flee abroad. He was formally dethroned in 1946.
