EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne Maria Hughes, née Petre (1815-1876), is depicted in this photograph taken in the year 1864. The image captures Anne in a moment of quiet reflection as she idly plucks the strings of her guitar. Married to the renowned English painter and printmaker, Arthur Hughes (1830-1896), Anne was an accomplished musician and poetess in her own right. Born into a distinguished family, Anne was the eldest daughter of Sir Henry Petre, 5th Baronet, and his wife, Anne Maria Petre, née Coke. Her musical abilities were nurtured from an early age, and she was known for her beautiful singing voice and proficiency on various musical instruments, including the guitar. Anne and Arthur Hughes met in the late 1840s and were married in 1851. Their union was a creative one, with Anne often serving as a source of inspiration for her husband's artwork. She appeared in several of his paintings, including "The Song of the Shirt" and "The Storyteller." Despite her husband's success, Anne preferred to live a more private life, devoting herself to her family and artistic pursuits. In this photograph, taken during the height of her husband's career, Anne is seen in a casual setting, dressed in a simple, flowing gown, with her hair loosely tied back. The serene expression on her face and the gentle curve of her fingers as they glide across the guitar strings evoke a sense of tranquility and creativity. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the life of Anne Maria Hughes, a talented woman who, while often overshadowed by her famous husband, made significant contributions to the artistic and musical worlds of her time.
