EDITORS COMMENTS
In this stunning photograph from 1858, Crown Prince Frederick William of Prussia (later known as Emperor Frederick III) and his new bride, Princess Victoria of Great Britain (known as Vicky), are warmly welcomed to the port of Antwerp, Belgium. The royal couple, who had married just a few days prior in London, embarked on a honeymoon cruise aboard the royal yacht, The Victoria and Albert, which had set sail from Gravesend, England. As the steamer approached Antwerp, the city was ablaze with festivities in honor of the newlyweds. The maritime scene is ornamented with an array of colorful flags and pennants, signaling the arrival of the royal couple. A large crowd has gathered at the dock, eager to catch a glimpse of the bridal party. The prince, dressed in a navy uniform, and his bride, resplendent in a white wedding gown and veil, can be seen waving from the deck of the ship. The pomp and grandeur of the occasion are reflected in the elaborate decorations adorning the paddle steamer, as well as the floral arrangements and banners lining the dock. The arrival of the royal couple in Antwerp marked the beginning of their European tour, which would take them to various cities across the continent. This photograph captures a moment in history, as the newlyweds are transported from their maritime journey to the land, where they will be greeted with open arms and celebrations fit for a king and queen.
