This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, published in Paris between 1816 and 1830, showcases two magnificent waterfowl species: the Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) and the Wild Greylag Goose (Anser anser). The illustration was produced under the artistic direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, with the engraving executed by Massard and the painting by Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. The Black Swan, depicted on the left, is a striking bird with its glossy black plumage, distinctive red eyes, and long, curved neck. Originally thought to be a mythical creature due to its absence in Europe, the Black Swan was first discovered in Australia in the late 17th century.
