EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determination and resilience of the Men of the 2/19th London Regiment (St Pancras) as they march towards the front line from Salonika, Greece, in December 1916. Part of the 180th Brigade, 60th Division of the British Army, these soldiers were among the thousands who were deployed to the Salonika Front during World War 1. The Salonika Front, also known as the Macedonian Front, was a lesser-known theatre of the war that lasted from 1915 until the end of 1918. The British Army arrived in Salonika in October 1915 to support the Serbian forces against the Bulgarian army. The harsh terrain and extreme weather conditions presented significant challenges for the soldiers, but they remained steadfast in their mission. In this image, the Men of the 2/19th London Regiment can be seen trudging through the muddy and rocky terrain, their faces set with concentration and determination. The snow-capped mountains in the background serve as a stark reminder of the harsh winter conditions they were facing. The soldiers carry their equipment and weapons, ready for the challenges that lay ahead. This photograph offers a poignant glimpse into the lives of the soldiers who served at the Salonika Front during World War 1. It is a testament to their courage and commitment to their duty, despite the difficult and challenging conditions they faced.
