Reverse of a novelty promotional postcard for What The Butler Saw by E. F. Parry and Frederick Mouillot. First produced at Wyndhams 2nd August 1905. For Lionel Rignold and Ada Blanches Comapnys touring to Kennington Theatre, 3rd June 1907. This is shown when the door is opened. Below the hand is: Fix Both Eyes On The Hand, Then Lower The Head Down Until The Tip Of The Nose Rests On The Edge Of The Door. In A Few Seconds The Hand Will Be Seen To Travel Towards The Parrot. The reverse has the ad for the play on the left, so leaving room only for the recipients name and address. Date: 1907

This intriguing reversal of a promotional postcard showcases the novelty element of a production of "What The Butler Saw" by E.F. Parry and Frederick Mouillot, first produced at Wyndham's Theatre on August 2, 1905. By 1907, the production had joined the touring repertoire of Lionel Rignold and Ada Blanche's company, playing at the Kennington Theatre. The image on the reverse side, meant to be viewed when the door of the postcard is opened, instructs the viewer to "Fix Both Eyes On The Hand, Then Lower The Head Down Until The Tip Of The Nose Rests On The Edge Of The Door." In a few seconds, the hand is promised to travel towards the parrot depicted in the illustration. The left side of the card features an advertisement for the popular theatrical entertainment, leaving only space for the recipient's name and address.
