EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the essence of the 79th Regiment, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, in the late 19th century. Established in 1793, the regiment has a rich and storied history, with its origins rooted in the Scottish Highlands. The Cameron Highlanders were renowned for their distinctive tartan, the Cameron of Lochiel, and their traditional Scottish dress, which included the iconic kilt, sporran, and bonnet. In this image, a group of soldiers from the regiment are seen standing in formation, their faces displaying a mix of determination and pride. The soldiers are dressed in their full regimental uniform, complete with their tartan kilts, which were made from the finest wool and meticulously woven to display the distinctive Cameron of Lochiel pattern. The soldiers' bonnets, or tam-o'-shanters, are adorned with the regimental badge, featuring a stag's head and the motto 'Siorrachd nan Gaidheal' or 'Land of the Highlanders'. The photograph was taken in the late 19th century, a time when the Cameron Highlanders were undergoing significant changes. In 1881, the regiment was reduced from two battalions to one, and in 1889, it was renamed The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders in honor of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Despite these changes, the regiment remained true to its Scottish heritage and continued to uphold the traditions and values that had been passed down through generations. This photograph is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Cameron Highlanders and their commitment to their regiment and their Scottish roots. It offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era of military history and Scottish tradition.
