EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative Christmas postcard, dated 1918, was sent from the Holy Land by a soldier of the Royal Garrison Artillery's 15 Heavy Battery, stationed in the Middle East towards the end of the First World War. The front of the card features a beautiful, intricately-detailed print of the nativity scene, set against the backdrop of the Holy Land's rugged terrain. The scene is framed by the official insignia of the Royal Garrison Artillery and the regimental number "15 Hvy Bty." On the reverse side of the card, a heartfelt pencilled note is addressed to a loved one in south east London. The soldier, identified as "Saddler Smirk," expresses his longing for home and his hopes for a peaceful Christmas amidst the chaos of war. The poem printed on the card, penned by Saddler Smirk himself, adds an intimate touch to the message: "A Merry Xmas to my dear wife, From the Holy Land, far from strife, Where the palm trees sway in the breeze, And the sun shines on the weary seas. Though I'm miles away from thee, My thoughts are ever with thee, And I pray that this Christmas day, May bring joy to our home in every way." This poignant postcard serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers during the war and the enduring power of love and hope in even the most challenging of circumstances.
