EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the early 1900s, a group of young girls sit on the lush grass outside one of the cottages at Dr Barnardo's Girls Village Home in Barkingside. Established in 1870 by Thomas Barnardo, Dr Barnardo's was a leading children's charity dedicated to providing care and support for orphaned, abandoned, and destitute children in Britain and beyond. The Girls Village Home in Barkingside was one of the many institutions established by Dr Barnardo's to provide a safe and nurturing environment for girls in need. The cottage in the photograph appears to be surrounded by beautiful gardens, with trees and flowers in bloom, providing a serene and idyllic setting for the children to play and relax. Despite the picturesque surroundings, the reality for many of the girls at the Home was one of hardship and struggle. They had been rescued from poverty, neglect, and abuse, and had often endured difficult and traumatic experiences before being taken in by Dr Barnardo's. The charity provided them with food, clothing, education, and a sense of belonging, giving them the opportunity to grow up in a safe and loving environment. The girls in the photograph seem happy and content as they sit on the grass, their laughter and joy echoing through the gardens. This image is a poignant reminder of the vital role that children's charities like Dr Barnardo's played in providing care and support for vulnerable children in the past, and continues to play today. The legacy of Dr Barnardo's lives on, inspiring new generations to care for and protect the most vulnerable members of society.
