Born on February 7, 1757, in Falmouth, Cornwall, Pellew entered the Royal Navy at a young age and quickly distinguished himself through his exceptional leadership, courage, and tactical prowess. This evocative image captures the visage of Lord Exmouth in his later years, with a stern yet resolute expression that belies the complexities of his naval career. The portrait, created by an unknown artist, showcases Pellew's impeccable uniform, adorned with the insignia of his high rank, including the Order of the Bath and the distinction of a viscount. Pellew's naval exploits began in earnest during the American Revolutionary War, where he commanded several successful engagements against the French and American forces. Retiring from active service in 1815, Lord Exmouth devoted the remainder of his life to public service, including serving as the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall from 1825 until his death on March 31, 1833.
