EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph illustration, created by F. John in 1910, showcases two fascinating extinct reptiles of the prehistoric world: Elginia mirabilis, the miraculous Elginia, and Hyperodapedon gordoni, the mighty Hyperodapedon. The Elginia mirabilis, a Pareiasaur from the Permian period, is depicted with its robust body covered in armor-like scales and a distinctive crest running along its spine. Its small head sits atop a long, heavy tail, suggesting a slow and steady gait. In contrast, the Hyperodapedon gordoni, a Rhynchosaur from the Triassic period, is shown with its distinctive beaked snout and armored back. Its powerful limbs and sharp claws indicate a strong and agile creature, capable of both digging for food and defending itself against predators. This illustration was originally published as part of the series "Tiere der Urwelt" (Animals of the Prehistoric World) by the Hamburg publishing house Reichardt Cocoa Company in 1910. The series aimed to bring the wonders of the prehistoric world to a wider audience, allowing people to marvel at the incredible diversity of life that once existed on Earth. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this chromolithograph illustration offer a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when these remarkable creatures roamed the Earth. Today, they serve as a reminder of the rich history of life on our planet and the importance of preserving the natural world for future generations to explore and appreciate.
