EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite bodycolour and watercolour painting on board, dated circa 1779, depicts a female Indian squirrel (Sciurus prionotis) perched gracefully on the aerial roots of a Ficus benghalensis, or Indian Banyan tree. The artwork, commissioned by Mrs. Wheler during the late 18th century, is a stunning example of the naturalistic illustrations produced during the height of European exploration and scientific discovery in Asia. The Ficus benghalensis, a large evergreen tree belonging to the Moraceae family, is native to the Indian subcontinent and is renowned for its unique prop roots that allow it to grow in a wide range of environments, including in areas with poor soil and limited water. The tree is also known as the "strangler fig" due to its ability to grow on other trees and eventually envelop and replace them. The Indian squirrel, a small, agile mammal, is a member of the Sciuridae family and is commonly found in forests and woodlands across South Asia. It is a placental mammal, belonging to the order Rodentia, and is characterized by its bushy tail, which is used for balance and communication. This artwork is a testament to the rich biodiversity of India and the European fascination with documenting and understanding the natural world. The intricate details of the Ficus benghalensis and the Indian squirrel are rendered with great care and accuracy, showcasing the skill and artistry of the unknown artist. The painting is also a reminder of the important role that women, such as Mrs. Wheler, played in the collection and dissemination of knowledge during this period. The painting is an essential addition to any collection focused on botany, zoology, or the history of natural history illustration. Its vibrant colors and intricate details make it a beautiful and captivating addition to any home or office, and a reminder of the rich natural heritage shared by India and the world.
