EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the annals of religious history, Saint Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) is depicted being honoured by Pope Sixtus V (1520-1590) in the hallowed halls of the Basilica of Assisi. The year was likely around 1215, a time when the Franciscan order was gaining significant momentum and recognition within the Catholic Church. Sixtus V, who had been Pope since 1585, is shown bestowing a special honour upon the humble saint. He is creating the Brotherhood of the Cordon, an esteemed group of Franciscan friars who would be granted the privilege of wearing a distinctive brown robe and cord, symbolizing their commitment to poverty and obedience. The pope's other hand gestures towards an open treasure chest, signifying the indulgences he is granting to Saint Francis and his followers. Indulgences were pardons for sins, granted by the Church, and were highly sought after by the faithful during this period. This act of generosity from the Pope further solidified the status of Saint Francis and the Franciscan order within the Church. The scene takes place in the Basilica of Assisi, a place of great significance to both Saint Francis and the Catholic Church. It is here where Saint Francis received the stigmata, the mystical wounds of the crucifixion, in 1224. The basilica also houses the tombs of both Saint Francis and Saint Clare, the founder of the Poor Clares, another branch of the Franciscan order. This powerful image captures the moment when Saint Francis, a man of humble beginnings, is recognised and honoured by the highest authority in the Catholic Church. It is a testament to the enduring influence of Saint Francis and the Franciscan order on the history of Christianity.
