EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting engraving captures the regal presence of Gabasheane Masupha, the Paramount Chief of the Basotho people of modern-day Lesotho, during his brief but significant reign from 1940 until his untimely death in 1941. Born in 1903, Masupha ascended to the throne following the passing of his father, Moshoeshoe II, who had been exiled from his own country. Masupha's rule was marked by his unwavering commitment to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Basotho people, as well as his efforts to modernize and strengthen their nation. In this striking portrait, engraved by Capuz for the prestigious Spanish and American Illustration magazine La Ilustracion Espanola y Americana in 1880, Masupha is depicted wearing the traditional Basotho attire, complete with a leopard-skin cloak and a magnificent headdress adorned with ostrich feathers. The vibrant colors of the engraving bring the image to life, capturing the essence of Masupha's proud and noble character. Despite his brief tenure, Masupha left an indelible mark on the history of Lesotho. He worked tirelessly to improve the lives of his people, implementing policies to promote education, healthcare, and economic development. Tragically, his reign was cut short when he was killed in a hunting accident, leaving the Basotho people to mourn the loss of their beloved leader. This poignant portrait serves as a reminder of Masupha's legacy and the enduring spirit of the Basotho people.
