EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the fierce determination of Emiliano Zapata, a legendary figure in Mexican history who led the rebellion against the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz in Southern Mexico during the Mexican Revolution of 1913. Born in the state of Morelos, Zapata became a hero to the peasants and indigenous people who had been exploited and dispossessed of their lands. Riding proudly on horseback, Zapata is shown with a serious expression, his hand resting on the pommel of his saddle, as he gazes off into the distance. His followers, known as the Zapatistas, fought valiantly for the restoration of lands taken from the people, and their motto of 'Tierra y Libertad' (Land and Liberty) became a rallying cry for the revolution. Zapata's leadership and military tactics were instrumental in the overthrow of Diaz, and he continued to fight for social justice and land reform until his death in 1919. This powerful image of Zapata on horseback is a testament to his enduring legacy as a Mexican revolutionary hero.
