EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming black and white portrait, we see a young and handsome George Henry Hubert Lascelles, later the 7th Earl of Harewood, around the age of five years old. The photograph, taken circa 1928, captures him in a playful and carefree moment, wearing a white sweater and a Panama hat adorned with a colorful hatband. George was the only son of Princess Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood (1897-1965), and her husband, Viscount Lascelles, later the 6th Earl of Harewood (1897-1957). He was born on 15 January 1923 at the family's London residence, 145 Piccadilly. The young boy's bright eyes and mischievous smile radiate warmth and joy, as he gazes off to the side, seemingly unfazed by the camera's presence. His casual attire, consisting of a white pullover and a sunhat, suggests a day spent outdoors, perhaps at the family's country estate, Harewood House in Yorkshire. George's mother, Princess Mary, was the youngest daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, making him a grandnephew of the monarch. After his father's death on 22 February 1947, George succeeded to the earldom and became the 7th Earl of Harewood on 24 May 1947. This image offers a glimpse into the early life of a future earl, showcasing his youthful charm and the close bond he shared with his mother, Princess Mary.
