EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image, captured by renowned war photographer G.H. Davis in 1945, documents the remnants of German land mines scattered across a battlefield during the final stages of World War II. The retreating German armies employed these deadly weapons on a large scale, leaving behind a dangerous legacy for Allied forces and civilians alike. Land mines, a type of explosive device, were an important weapon in the arsenal of both Axis and Allied forces during the war. However, their indiscriminate nature made them particularly notorious. These mines came in various forms, including teller mines, mushroom mines, box mines, and Riegel mines, among others. Some were designed to be triggered by pressure, while others were booby traps, set off by tripwires or other mechanisms. The anti-tank and anti-personnel mines in this photograph illustrate the devastating power and versatility of these weapons. The teller mine, with its distinctive flat, disc-shaped body, was designed to be hidden beneath the ground and detonated when an enemy tank or other heavy vehicle passed over it. The mushroom mine, named for its distinctive shape, was designed to be triggered by the pressure of a foot or wheel. The shoe mine, or Schu mine, was a small, portable mine that could be carried and hidden by an individual. The presence of these mines posed a constant danger to soldiers and civilians alike, long after the battle had ended. The image of the minefield serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive power and enduring legacy of war.
