Leitner's travels began in 1863 when he joined the British consul, Sir Samuel Baker, on an expedition to explore Lake Albert and the Nile region. Leitner's contributions to African exploration were significant, particularly in the areas of cartography and ethnography. He produced some of the most accurate maps of the region at the time and was known for his meticulous record-keeping, which included extensive notes on the customs, languages, and cultures of the various African peoples he encountered. Despite the challenges and dangers of traveling in Africa during the 19th century, Leitner remained undeterred.
