EDITORS COMMENTS
This image from The Illustrated London News, dated August 1964, provides a fascinating glimpse into the audacious escape of Charles Frederick Wilson, one of the key figures in the Great Train Robbery of August 1963. The notorious heist, which took place on August 8th of that year, saw a gang of 15 men intercept a train carrying over £2.6 million in banknotes from Glasgow to London. The escape from Winson Green Prison in Birmingham, depicted in this photograph, was a crucial moment in the aftermath of the robbery. Wilson, who had been remanded in custody in connection with the crime, managed to evade prison guards by disguising himself as a prison officer. In the photograph, Wilson can be seen wearing a fake uniform, complete with a forged identity card and a replica of the prison's crest. The caption accompanying the image in The Illustrated London News reads, "How to rob a prison of its prisoner: A page from The Illustrated London News, detailing the escape of Charles Frederick Wilson, one of the gang responsible for the Great Train Robbery of 8th August 1963." The article goes on to describe how Wilson had bribed a prison worker for information about the prison's security measures and used this knowledge to plan his escape. The Great Train Robbery remains one of the most infamous crimes in British history, and the audacity of Wilson's escape from Winson Green Prison only added to the intrigue surrounding the case. This photograph, with its intriguing caption, offers a unique insight into the mind of a criminal mastermind and the lengths to which he would go to evade capture.
