EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative studio shot captures the enigmatic presence of Guy, a western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) who resided at London Zoo from 1967 until his death in 1978. Guy was a beloved figure among visitors, known for his gentle demeanor and intelligence. After his passing, his body was donated to the Natural History Museum, where he continues to make a significant contribution to scientific research as a valuable display specimen. As a member of the great ape order Primates, Guy belonged to the infraorder Simiiformes, the advanced primates, and the superfamily Hominoidea, which includes Old World monkeys, apes, and humans. He was part of the family Hominidae, the great apes, and the subfamily Gorillinae, which includes eastern and western gorillas. Guy was an epitherian, a placental mammal, and a member of the order Primates, which also includes lemurs, lorises, and tarsiers. Haplorhini, the suborder of primates that includes humans, apes, and tarsiers, is characterized by a dry, non-prehensile nose and a lack of a tail. Guy, like all gorillas, was a simian primate, with a prehensile tail used for balance and grasping. This photograph, taken against a pristine white background, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when Guy was a living, breathing, and much-loved resident of London Zoo. It serves as a reminder of the rich history of animal conservation and scientific discovery, and the ongoing importance of preserving and studying our planet's diverse and fascinating wildlife.
