EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Handley Page Harrow, a British four-engine biplane that once played a pivotal role in the bombing campaigns of the Second World War. By late 1939, however, the Harrow's days as a bomber were numbered. The Handley Page Harrow, designed and manufactured by the Handley Page Aircraft Company, was a versatile aircraft that could be used for both day and night bombing missions. Its first operational sortie took place in August 1937, and by the time war broke out in September 1939, over 100 Harrows had been delivered to the Royal Air Force (RAF). Initially, the Harrow proved to be an effective weapon against the German military targets. However, as the war progressed and more advanced aircraft such as the Avro Manchester and the Short Stirling entered service, the Harrow's bombing capabilities became outdated. In late 1939, the RAF began to relegate the Harrow from bombing duties and instead used it as a transport aircraft. The spacious interior of the Harrow made it an ideal candidate for carrying troops, supplies, and even wounded soldiers. The aircraft's long range and endurance also made it an essential asset for long-distance transport missions. This photograph shows a Handley Page Harrow in flight, its four engines roaring in the background. The plane's distinctive shape and markings are clearly visible, a testament to its storied history in the skies during the early years of the Second World War. Despite being relegated from bombing, the Harrow continued to serve the RAF valiantly in its new role as a transport aircraft, playing a crucial part in the war effort until the end of the conflict in 1945.
