EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, created in 1837, showcases two magnificent birds of prey native to the Americas: the Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) and the Crested Eagle (Morphnus guianensis). The Harpy Eagle, depicted on the left, is a near-threatened species native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Known for its powerful build and distinctive feathered crest, this apex predator is the largest and most powerful eagle in the Americas, with a wingspan reaching up to 7 feet. The Harpy Eagle's diet consists mainly of monkeys and sloths, which it hunts by ambushing from above in the dense forest canopy. The eagle's large, hooked beak and powerful talons make short work of its prey, and its keen eyesight and hearing enable it to locate and track its victims from great distances. On the right, the Crested Eagle (Morphnus guianensis) is shown with its distinctive crest of feathers extending from the back of its head. This eagle is found in the forests of Central and South America, and is known for its predatory prowess, hunting primarily reptiles and large insects. This exquisite illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a French naturalist and artist, and was engraved by Terreni under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The engraving was published by Batelli e Figli in Florence, Italy, and is a testament to the beauty and intricacy of 19th-century scientific illustration.
