EDITORS COMMENTS
"This striking photograph captures Harriet Smithson, an Irish actress of great beauty and talent, in the prime of her career during the mid-19th century. Smithson, born in Dublin in 1805, rose to prominence on the London stage and was hailed for her captivating performances. It was during one of her performances that she caught the attention of the renowned French composer Hector Berlioz, who was visiting England. Berlioz was instantly smitten with Smithson and wrote a letter to her, expressing his admiration and proposing marriage. Despite the language barrier, Smithson and Berlioz eventually met and fell deeply in love. They married in 1833, and the union proved to be a source of inspiration for Berlioz's music. Smithson's influence can be heard in many of his compositions, particularly in the "Symphonie fantastique," which was inspired by his love for her. In this photograph, Smithson is depicted in a low-neckline gown, showcasing her elegant collarbone and the delicate curve of her neck. The image captures her poised and serene demeanor, reflecting the grace and sophistication of the era. Smithson's striking features and captivating presence continue to intrigue and inspire, making her an enduring figure in both Irish and European cultural history." This photograph, taken in 1854, offers a glimpse into the life of an extraordinary woman who left an indelible mark on the arts world. Harriet Smithson, the Irish actress who captured the heart of Hector Berlioz, remains a fascinating and enigmatic figure whose story continues to captivate audiences today.
