EDITORS COMMENTS
This miniature painting, created in the 15th century by the renowned chronicler Jean Froissart, vividly depicts a pivotal moment in English history: the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, led by the charismatic Wat Tyler. In this scene, Tyler, dressed in simple peasant attire and carrying a flag adorned with a lily, the symbol of the rebellion, meets with the revolutionary priest John Ball. The two leaders stand in the midst of an agitated crowd, with soldiers in the background, hinting at the turmoil and chaos that gripped the country during this period. The Peasants' Revolt, also known as the Great Rising or the Peasants' War, was a widespread uprising against the oppressive feudal system and heavy taxation. It began in May 1381, with rebels from Essex marching on London, demanding the abolition of serfdom, tithes, and other grievances. The meeting between Tyler and Ball, which took place in Smithfield, is believed to have occurred on June 14, 1381. Despite the initial success of the rebellion, the situation turned sour when the rebels, led by Tyler, stormed the Tower of London and were met with a brutal response from the city's defenders. The confrontation resulted in the deaths of many rebels, including Tyler, who was killed on June 15. The rebellion was eventually suppressed, but it marked a significant turning point in English history, as it highlighted the growing discontent among the peasantry and the need for reforms. This miniature painting, a testament to the artistic and historical prowess of Froissart, offers a glimpse into the tumultuous events of the Middle Ages and the passion and determination of the people who dared to challenge the established order.
