EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures an Indian priest, deep in thought, as he performs his religious duties at the Sri Sri Rama Temple in Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies, around the turn of the 20th century. The temple, which was established in the late 19th century, served as a spiritual sanctuary for the large Indian community that had been brought to the Caribbean island as indentured laborers. The Indian community in Trinidad, which numbered over 140,000 by the early 1900s, hailed primarily from the Indian states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Orissa. Many of them were Hindu, and they brought with them their rich cultural traditions, including their faith. The temple in Port of Spain became a focal point of their community life and a symbol of their resilience and determination to preserve their heritage in a new land. The priest in the photograph is dressed in traditional Indian attire, with a saffron-colored dhoti and a shawl draped over his shoulders. He holds a small, intricately carved wooden deity in his hands, his eyes closed in concentration as he recites prayers. The temple behind him is adorned with colorful flags and decorations, and the sound of devotional music can be heard in the background. Despite the challenges they faced in their new environment, the Indian community in Trinidad managed to maintain their religious practices and pass them down to future generations. Today, the Sri Sri Rama Temple in Port of Spain remains an important cultural and spiritual institution, attracting visitors from all over the world who are drawn to its rich history and vibrant traditions.
