This striking photograph captures Raffaele Borea Ricci d'Olmo, an Italian naval officer of great distinction, during his brief tenure as the first Italian governor of Tripolitania in October 1911. The Italo-Turkish War had commenced just a few months prior, and the Italian invasion of the Libyan colony was underway. Here, Borea Ricci d'Olmo is depicted riding in a carriage, en route to his headquarters building in Tripoli. Born in Palermo, Sicily, in 1862, Borea Ricci d'Olmo joined the Italian Royal Navy in 1877. He rose through the ranks, earning the title of Counter Admiral in 1911. When the Italo-Turkish War broke out, Borea Ricci d'Olmo was appointed as the Italian governor of Tripolitania. He held this position for only a few days before being replaced by a civilian governor. The photograph offers a glimpse into the early days of the Italian campaign in Libya. The headquarters building, with its colonial architecture, stands proudly in the background, symbolizing the Italian ambition to establish a colonial presence in North Africa.
