EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-coloured lithograph depicts Lilium cernuum, also known as the Wood Lily or Turtlehead Lily. The image is taken from A. Grove's supplement to H.J. Elwes' monograph of the genus Lilium, published in 1933. The supplement was illustrated by the talented Lillian Snelling, whose expert hand is evident in the intricate details and vibrant colors of this print. Lilium cernuum is a native North American plant, found in woodlands from Ontario to Minnesota, south to Georgia and Tennessee. It is known for its distinctive nodding, bell-shaped flowers, which hang from long, slender stems. The flowers have a unique turtlehead shape, with three lobes at the top forming the "head" and three at the bottom resembling the "tails." The flowers come in various shades of pink, purple, and white, and are often speckled with darker spots. The Wood Lily is a herbaceous perennial, growing up to 1.5 meters tall. It blooms in late spring or early summer, and its flowers last for several weeks. The plant is pollinated by beetles, which are attracted to the fragrant, nectar-rich flowers. The bulbs of Lilium cernuum are edible and were once used by indigenous peoples as a food source. This beautiful lithograph not only showcases the aesthetic appeal of Lilium cernuum but also contributes to the scientific record of this fascinating plant. The intricate details and accurate coloration make it an invaluable resource for botanical research and appreciation.
