EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Jussieus Dictionary of Natural Science published in Florence, Italy in 1837, showcases two majestic birds of prey, the King Vulture, Sarcoramphus papa, and the Griffon Vulture, Gyps fulvus. The illustration, produced under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, was created by the skilled hands of J.G. Pretre and expertly engraved by Giarre. The King Vulture, depicted on the left, is the largest of the New World vultures, with a wingspan reaching up to 10 feet. Its distinctive featherless head and neck are covered in red, warty skin, and its powerful beak is equipped with a sharp hook. The King Vulture is a scavenger, feeding primarily on carrion, and its keen sense of smell allows it to locate dead animals from great distances. On the right, the Griffon Vulture, also known as the Egyptian Vulture, is a bird of the Old World. It is easily recognizable by its distinctive bald head and neck, which is covered in red, scaly skin. The Griffon Vulture is the largest of the Old World vultures, with a wingspan of up to 10.5 feet. Like its New World counterpart, the Griffon Vulture is a scavenger, feeding on carrion and occasionally on small mammals. Both vultures play crucial roles in their respective ecosystems by removing carcasses and preventing the spread of diseases. Their powerful beaks and sharp talons make them formidable hunters, while their keen sense of smell helps them locate food. This stunning engraving not only captures the beauty and power of these magnificent birds but also serves as a testament to the skill and artistry of the artists and engravers of the time.
