EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 221: Leiothrix argentauris, the Silver-eared Mesia, is depicted in this stunning watercolor illustration by Rajman Singh, part of Brian Hodgson's extensive collection of birds and mammals of Nepal from the nineteenth century. The Silver-eared Mesia is a small, vibrant passerine bird belonging to the family Leiothrichidae, native to the Himalayas and other parts of Asia. The bird in this illustration is perched gracefully on a blue branch, showcasing its distinctive silver ear patches and blue-green back. The intricate anatomy of the bird is rendered in exquisite detail, from the delicate feathers on its wings to the subtle textures of its plumage. The Silver-eared Mesia's bright orange-red beak and legs contrast beautifully with its blue-green back and chestnut-brown underparts. Brian Hodgson (1800-1894) was a British naturalist and explorer who made significant contributions to the study of the natural history of Nepal and the Himalayas. His collection of birds and mammals, which includes over 1,500 specimens, is now housed in the Natural History Museum in London. This illustration, created in the 1800s, provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Himalayas during a time when European explorers were first documenting the region's rich biodiversity. The Silver-eared Mesia remains a popular bird among birdwatchers and naturalists, and this beautiful illustration serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and studying the world's natural wonders.
