EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures a platoon of the 21st Regiment of the Chasseurs Alpins, or Les Diables Bleus (The Blue Devils), making their way along a mountain path by a crystal-clear stream. The scene is brought to life by the meticulous brushstrokes of French artist Pierre Comba (1859-1934). Comba was deeply committed to depicting the French military, with a particular focus on the Chasseurs Alpins. During the Great War, his watercolours were widely reproduced as postcards, immortalizing the bravery and tenacity of these elite mountain troops. Comba was a respected member of both the Society of Military Painters and the French Alpine Club, and was honoured with the Palmes Acad魩ques (Palms of Academia), an esteemed accolade bestowed by the French government for outstanding achievements in the arts or literature. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Comba was actively involved in charities supporting soldiers in Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes region. This image transports us back in time, offering a glimpse into the rugged terrain and unwavering spirit of the Chasseurs Alpins during the early 20th century. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and resilience of the soldiers who defended their country on the treacherous mountain paths of the Alps.
