LCC-LFB-AFS training -- tying a knot

The Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) was created in 1938 to supplement the regular London Fire Brigade. Some 21, 000 volunteer firefighters would be recruited, all of whom had to undergo 60 hours basic training. Here AFS firemen are undergoing Knots and Lines training. All firemen were expected to be able to tie up to 24 different knots, in both daylight and in the dark. Here, Section Leader Leppard demonstrates the correct method of tying a knot, watched by four trainees

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, London Fire Brigade's Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) trainees focus intently on their instructor as he demonstrates the intricacies of knot-tying. Established in 1938, the AFS was a vital supplement to the regular London Fire Brigade, with over 21,000 volunteer firefighters recruited to support the city's firefighting efforts during World War II. These volunteers underwent a rigorous 60-hour basic training program, which included mastering up to 24 different knots, both day and night. Section Leader Leppard, dressed in his AFS uniform, expertly ties a knot as his four trainees look on, their expressions a mix of concentration and determination. The trainees, also in uniform, hold ropes and ladders, ready to practice the skill they are learning. The photograph captures a moment of focused instruction, as the future firefighters prepare to put their newfound knowledge into practice. The 1930s were a pivotal decade for the London Fire Brigade, with the AFS playing a crucial role in the city's firefighting efforts during a time of great change and uncertainty. This photograph offers a glimpse into the training regimen that prepared these volunteers for the challenges they would face in the years to come.
