EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the LCC-LFB (London County Council-London Fire Brigade) first emergency tender crew based at Clerkenwell Fire Station in 1919. The fire engine, a significant forerunner of modern emergency tenders, was primarily designed for use with breathing apparatus to combat fires in enclosed spaces. Equipped with a petrol engine generator, it supplied the electric floodlights carried on board, enhancing the team's visibility during night-time operations. The crew members in the photograph are wearing the Proto one-hour self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus, which was introduced by the London Fire Brigade in 1908. The Proto breathing apparatus, featuring a face mask, oxygen tank, and air hose, allowed firefighters to work in smoke-filled environments for extended periods, significantly improving their safety and effectiveness. The LCC-LFB's first emergency tender proved its worth in various firefighting scenarios, leading to the development of more advanced enclosed models. This marked the beginning of the era of dedicated emergency tenders within the London Fire Brigade. The crew members in this photograph, with their goggles and breathing apparatus, embody the courage and determination of the early firefighting teams, paving the way for the professional firefighting services we know today.
