EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the late 1890s, captures the LCC-MFB (London County Council-Metropolitan Fire Brigade) Streatham fire station and its adjacent family quarters. At the time, a new fire station was being constructed to serve the local community, and this building provided temporary accommodation for the firemen and their families. The London Fire Brigade, established in 1865, was responsible for firefighting and fire prevention in the city. During the late 19th century, as London's population grew, so did the need for more fire stations and firemen. This photograph offers a glimpse into the living conditions of the firefighting families who dedicated their lives to protecting the community. The Victorian-era building, with its red-brick facade and tall chimney, is situated on a quiet street. The fire station, located to the left of the image, is a two-story structure with large bay doors and a hose reel visible outside. The family quarters, to the right, are connected to the station by a narrow passageway. The windows of the family quarters are adorned with white curtains, and laundry hangs out to dry on a clothesline. This photograph provides a unique insight into the daily lives of the firefighting families during the late 1800s. Despite the challenges and risks that came with their profession, the families were an integral part of the fire station community, and this image serves as a reminder of their important role in London's history.
