EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 19th century print captures the grandeur and pomp of the marriage procession of Anne Boleyn, as she made her way to Westminster Abbey for her formal union with King Henry VIII in January 1533. The image is an artist's impression of the historic event, which marked the end of Anne's long and arduous journey to become the Queen of England. Anne, resplendent in her rich, red velvet gown and ermine-trimmed mantle, is depicted riding in a magnificent carriage, drawn by six white horses. Her train, carried by a train-bearer, trails behind her, adding to the regal spectacle. Surrounding her are the splendidly dressed nobles and courtiers, who follow in various carriages and on horseback, all adding to the grandeur of the procession. The marriage of Anne Boleyn to Henry VIII was a significant moment in English history. Anne, who had previously been the King's mistress, had defied the odds to secure the throne, despite the opposition of the Church and the nobility. Her marriage to Henry marked the beginning of the English Reformation and the break from the Roman Catholic Church. The print, with its intricate details and vivid colors, offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Tudor court. The artist has expertly captured the sense of excitement and anticipation that must have surrounded the marriage procession, as the people of London gathered to witness the historic event.
