EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the elegant and enigmatic presence of Mary Wilson Goelet, Duchess of Roxburghe (1873-1937). Born in New York City to a prominent American family, Mary Wilson Goelet was an heiress to her father's vast fortune. Her life took an unexpected turn when she met and married Henry John Temple-Gore-Granville-Pelham-Clinton-Hope-Marsham-Campbell, the 8th Duke of Roxburghe, in 1902. The Duke, who was 23 years her senior, was a British aristocrat and a descendant of the famous poet Lord Byron. The photograph, taken in 1937, shows Mary Wilson Goelet in her later years, yet her beauty and refinement remain undiminished. She is dressed in an elegant evening gown, her hair styled in an intricate updo, and her piercing gaze fixed on the camera. The Duchess of Roxburghe was known for her sharp wit, her love of horses, and her generosity to charity. She divided her time between her homes in Scotland and New York, and was a frequent visitor to Europe's grandest courts. Mary Wilson Goelet's marriage to the Duke was a scandal in its time, as she was considered an American interloper in the hallowed halls of British aristocracy. But she proved herself to be a gracious and beloved member of the British nobility, and her legacy continues to be celebrated in both America and Europe. This photograph is a testament to her enduring beauty and the fascinating intersection of American and European high society in the early 20th century.
