EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving depicts a Merian Duck, Anas merianae, a fascinating hybrid duck species that resulted from the mating of a Muscovy duck, Cairina moschata, and a domestic Mallard, Anas platyrhynchos. The Merian Duck, named after the naturalist and illustrator Mark Catesby's patron, Lady Anne Mariana Cavendish, was first described in the late 17th century. The image is taken from George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's "The Naturalist's Miscellany," published in London in 1800. Shaw and Nodder were renowned naturalists and illustrators of their time, and their work was instrumental in documenting and cataloging various species of animals, including this intriguing hybrid duck. The Merian Duck is depicted with its distinctive features, including its elongated, curved bill, which is a characteristic of the Muscovy duck, and its iridescent green head, which is a feature of the Mallard. The Merian Duck was once considered a separate species but is now recognized as a hybrid. The handcolored engraving technique used in this print enhances the intricacy and detail of the Merian Duck's plumage, adding to its aesthetic appeal. The naturalistic representation of the bird, along with the meticulous attention to detail, makes this print an essential addition to any collection of historical natural history illustrations.
