EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful photograph captures the intense gaze and unwavering determination of Major Michael John O'Leary VC, an Irish hero of the First World War. Born on September 29, 1890, O'Leary joined the 1st Battalion of the Irish Guards and was just a Lance Corporal when he performed the act of bravery that earned him the Victoria Cross (VC), the most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. The photograph, taken in 1915, depicts O'Leary in his military uniform, adorned with the distinctive green shamrock cap badge of the Irish Guards. His VC medal, a symbol of his exceptional courage, is proudly displayed on his left chest. The date of the award, 1915, is inscribed below the medal. O'Leary's heroism unfolded during a localised operation on the Western Front near the French village of Cuinchy.
