The Caribbean monk seal is a critically endangered Phocid seal, belonging to the order Carnivora and the family Monachidae, which includes the monk seals. This eutherian, caniform mammal is native to the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, making it the only seal species found in the Americas. The Caribbean monk seal is characterized by its large, paddle-like foreflippers, which are adapted for efficient swimming in the aquatic environment. Its earless, streamlined body is covered with short, coarse fur, and its elongated snout is equipped with small, external nares and nostrils.
