EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of the first successful rocket-powered flight of the Heinkel He176 aircraft, which took place on January 20, 1936. The Heinkel He176, also known as the "Flying Rocket," was a groundbreaking innovation in the field of aviation. Designed and built by the German engineer, Hansjörg Stark, and his team at Heinkel Flugzeugwerke, this single-seat, tailless aircraft was the world's first jet-powered aircraft, predating the more famous Heinkel HeS 3, which powered the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter by several years. The Heinkel He176 was powered by a pair of HeS 1 rocket engines, each producing 1.5 kN of thrust. During the test flight, the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 50 feet (15 meters) and a speed of around 120 km/h (75 mph). The flight lasted only a few seconds, but it marked a significant milestone in the development of jet propulsion technology. The success of the Heinkel He176 flight paved the way for further research and development in the field of jet engines, leading to the creation of more advanced and powerful jet aircraft. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and vision of the engineers and innovators who pushed the boundaries of aviation technology in the 1930s.
