EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon" published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838, showcases two of the world's most critically endangered species: the Batess pygmy antelope (Neotragus batesi) and the anoa or midget buffalo (Bubalus depressicornis). The Batess pygmy antelope, also known as Bates' pygmy antelope, is a small antelope native to the lowlands of Cameroon and Gabon in Central Africa. With a height of only 25 cm at the shoulder and a weight of around 5 kg, it is one of the smallest antelopes in the world. The species is critically endangered due to habitat loss and hunting. The anoa, on the other hand, is the smallest living species of buffalo and is native to the lowland forests of New Guinea. It is also known as the midget buffalo or the dwarf buffalo. An adult anoa stands at around 100 cm at the shoulder and weighs up to 350 kg. The anoa is critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching for its meat and hide. This beautiful illustration not only captures the unique physical characteristics of these two species but also highlights the importance of their conservation. The intricate details of the engraving show the delicate features of the Batess pygmy antelope and the robust build of the anoa, making it a valuable addition to any collection of zoological or natural history prints.
