EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Cod fish, Gadus morhua, Baccala 1 and whiting, Merlangius merlangus, Merlango comune 2," is a beautiful example of the exquisite detail and artistry found in the pages of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretreatment and direction by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The image features two types of fish: the cod, or Baccala (Gadus morhua), and the whiting, or Merlango comune (Merlangius merlangus). The cod, depicted on the left, is a large, sturdy fish with a distinctive head and a body covered in small, round scales. Its mouth is filled with sharp, pointed teeth, and its dorsal fin runs the length of its back. The whiting, on the right, is a smaller, slender fish with a more rounded body and a prominent dorsal fin. Its scales are larger and more elongated than those of the cod, and its mouth is smaller and filled with smaller, flat teeth. Turpin, who oversaw the production of this illustration, was a leading figure in the field of botanical illustration during the 19th century. His meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the natural world with both accuracy and beauty made him a highly sought-after collaborator for scientific publications. This illustration is a testament to his skill and the high standards of the scientific community during this period. The use of the copperplate stipple engraving technique adds an additional layer of intricacy and depth to the image, with the fine, dotted lines creating a textured effect that brings the fish to life. The handcolouring further enhances the realism and vibrancy of the illustration, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
