EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the costume of Konrad von Thuringen, the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights, who passed away in 1241. The image is taken from Hefner-Alteneck's "Costumes, Artworks, and Appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th Century," published in Frankfurt in 1889. The illustration was created by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck, a renowned German museum curator, archaeologist, art historian, illustrator, and etcher. Konrad von Thuringen is shown here in full regalia, dressed in the traditional attire of a 14th-century knight. He wears a long, flowing tunic, a surcoat bearing the Teutonic Order's cross, and a helmet adorned with a crest. In his right hand, he holds a sword, a symbol of his military prowess and authority. Konrad is depicted in the midst of a charge, ready to lead his knights into battle on horseback. The Grand Master's costume is reminiscent of the elaborate and ornate garments worn by kings and high-ranking officials during this period. The intricate details of the fabric, the rich colors, and the meticulously crafted accessories all serve to highlight the grandeur and opulence of the time. Interestingly, the image also includes several intriguing details that suggest a connection to religious themes. For instance, the background depicts a scene of Jesus Christ on the cross, while a Jewish prayerbook and a parchment are visible at Konrad's feet. This may be a reference to the Crusades, during which the Teutonic Knights played a significant role in expanding Christian influence in Europe and the Holy Land. This image is a testament to the rich artistic and historical traditions of the Middle Ages and serves as a reminder of the intricate and complex world that existed during this period. It is currently housed in the University and City Library of Leipzig, Germany, and is a valuable addition to any collection of medieval art and history.
