EDITORS COMMENTS
In this chromolithograph from Hefner-Alteneck's "Costumes, Artworks and Appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th Century," we are transported back to the late 15th century in Germany, where two young noblemen proudly display their aristocratic attire. Both men are clean-shaven with long flowing hair, and they are dressed in the fashionable mi-parti style, which features a combination of upper and lower garments. The first nobleman wears a long, gold-embroidered doublet, which is fitted at the waist and flares out at the hips. The intricate gold embroidery adorning the doublet showcases the wealth and status of the wearer. He accessorizes his outfit with a short cape, which is draped over his shoulders and fastened at the neck. The nobleman carries his sword in front of him, ready for action. The second nobleman dons a short coat, which is also adorned with intricate designs, but in this case, they are in the form of richly embellished armory. The coat is worn over a white shirt and hose, and he completes his outfit with a helmet, shield, and sword. His sword is carried to his right side, indicating that he may be mounted on horseback. These noblemen are likely Sir Johann VI von Kronberg and his wife, Katharina Reifenberg, as depicted on their effigies in St. Peter and St. Paul's Church in Taunus, Hessen, Germany. The chromolithograph, created by the renowned German museum curator, archaeologist, art historian, illustrator, and etcher, Dr. Hefner-Alteneck, offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and style of the German nobility during the late 15th century. The intricate details of their costumes, armor, and heraldry provide a window into the opulence and grandeur of this era.
