EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Eastern Quoll and Water Opossum," is a captivating illustration from the esteemed "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretre and direction by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The engraving features two intriguing and elusive creatures native to the eastern Australian and Tasmanian regions: the Eastern Quoll (Dasyurus viverrinus) and the Water Opossum, also known as the Yapok or Northern Water Possum (Chironectes minimus). The Eastern Quoll, depicted on the left, is a small, agile marsupial with a distinctive purple-brown coat, pointed snout, and bushy tail. The Water Opossum, on the right, is a semi-aquatic marsupial, with a grayish-brown coat, short legs, and webbed feet. In the background, a beautiful Sarracenia purpurea, or Purple Pitcher Plant, adorns the scene. This carnivorous plant, native to wetlands in North America, is shown with its distinctive bell-shaped leaves, filled with digestive enzymes, ready to trap unsuspecting insects. Turpin, a French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, is renowned for his exceptional talent in botanical illustration. This enchanting image, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, is a testament to his skill and dedication to the natural world. The Eastern Quoll and Water Opossum, both edible and hunted for their fur and meat, were important food sources for Indigenous Australians. The history of these fascinating creatures and their relationship to the natural world is further enhanced by the inclusion of the Purple Pitcher Plant, a plant that adds to the intrigue and beauty of this illustration.
