EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored engraving, created by Fournier after an illustration by Oudart for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris in 1849, showcases two fascinating marine species: the European sea sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) and the skate (Dipturus batis, also known as Raia gaimardi). The European sea sturgeon, a critically endangered species, is depicted with its distinctive elongated snout and armored body, which is covered in large, overlapping scales. In contrast, the skate, a flatfish, is shown with its flattened body and wing-like pectoral fins, which allow it to move gracefully along the ocean floor. The intricate details of their anatomical features are beautifully captured in this 19th-century illustration. The European sea sturgeon was once abundant in the Atlantic Ocean, but due to overfishing and habitat destruction, its population has drastically declined. Today, conservation efforts are underway to protect this ancient and valuable species, which can grow up to 2 meters in length and can live for over 100 years. The skate, on the other hand, is a common skate species found in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean seas. Despite its wide distribution, it is still facing threats from overfishing and bycatch. This image serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the rich biodiversity of our oceans and the unique creatures that inhabit them.
