This hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, published in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali (Dictionary of Natural Sciences) in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases three fascinating fossils of extinct marine creatures: Verticillites 1, Rubula soldanii 2, and Nubecularia lucifuga 3. The central fossil, Verticillites, represents the remains of an extinct demosponge, a type of marine organism that is not truly a plant or an animal but rather a member of the phylum Porifera. Its intricate, lattice-like structure is reminiscent of a black truffle or tuber, with the tiny fossilized pores resembling the melanosporum or cibarium of a modern truffle. To the left, the fossil of Rubula soldanii displays the delicate, branching structure of an ancient sponge, now extinct.
