EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving, created as an afterpiece to an illustration by Thomas Rowlandson from Domenico Angelo's renowned fencing manual "The School of Fencing," published in London in 1787, showcases a gentleman fencer in the midst of disarming his opponent after a successful parry of a carte thrust. The intricate details of the engraving reveal the finesse and elegance of the 18th-century fencing style, as the two gentlemen engage in a duel or combat. The gentleman fencer, dressed in the fashionable attire of the time, stands with a poised and confident demeanor. His left hand expertly parries his opponent's carte, a short, light sword, while his right hand skillfully maneuvers to seize the opponent's weapon. The opponent, momentarily off-balance, reacts in surprise as he loses his weapon. The engraving masterfully captures the intensity and concentration of the fencing match, as well as the swift and precise movements required for such a disarm. Thomas Rowlandson, a prominent English artist and satirist, created the original illustration for Domenico Angelo's fencing manual, which was widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive and influential works on the art of swordplay during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The copperplate engraving serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of fencing as a refined and sophisticated pastime, as well as a reminder of the intricate techniques and strategies employed by fencers during this era.
