EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the impressive Giant Rhubarb, also known as Gunnera tinctoria or Gunnera scabra, a native plant of Chile. The image is taken from the horticultural masterpiece "Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe" by Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaire, published in Ghent, Belgium, in 1870. The Giant Rhubarb is a large, herbaceous perennial that can grow up to 3 meters tall. Its large, lobed leaves, which can reach up to 2 meters in length, are a distinctive feature of this plant. The leaves are covered in small hairs and have a distinctive, glossy texture. The plant produces large, spadix inflorescences that are surrounded by large, bracts. The Giant Rhubarb was once used by the indigenous people of Chile for various purposes, including as a food source and for making dyes. The plant contains oxalic acid, which can be toxic if ingested in large quantities. However, the leaves can be cooked and eaten in small amounts, and the plant has been used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments. The intricate details of the Giant Rhubarb's leaves and inflorescences are beautifully captured in this handcoloured lithograph. The vibrant colours and precise shading bring the plant to life, making it a true botanical treasure. This image is a testament to the meticulous work of the horticulturists and artists of the time, who dedicated themselves to documenting the natural world in all its glory.
