EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Green Spoonworm, Bonellia viridis, also known as Bonellia verde. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretre and direction by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin (1775-1840) is renowned as one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. His meticulous attention to detail and mastery of the stipple engraving technique are evident in this beautiful representation of the Green Spoonworm. The Green Spoonworm is a unique marine organism, resembling a long, green, eel-like creature. It is also known as the Amberjack Spoonworm due to its association with the Amberjack fish, Seriola dumerili. The Green Spoonworm is a parasitic worm that attaches itself to the gills of the Dumerili Amberjack, providing a shelter and food source for the developing larvae. The Green Spoonworm's body is covered in small, green, spoon-shaped structures, which give it its name. These structures are not for feeding but serve to confuse and deter predators. The Green Spoonworm is a fascinating example of the complex relationships that exist between different species in the marine ecosystem. This historic image provides a glimpse into the natural world as it was understood during the 19th century, showcasing the beauty and intrigue of the marine environment and the skill of the illustrator and engraver in capturing it for future generations to appreciate.
